Artwork Story

Exhibited Laguna Art Museum 1998-9 "Life Lessons: How Art Can Change Your Life"

Judith Spence

This wicked double entendre is actually quite deliciously complicated. On the one hand it refers to Jean Arp's bold Dada gesture of composing a collage from the random toss of squares of various sizes. On the other it comments ironically on the practice of a particularly hyperintellectual conceptualism. Christine Burgin once commented that the pleasure of an artist making such dry work is like a filing clerk calling out gleefully, "Hey, look at my neat new filing system!" The fact that this work links these two art-historical extremes in the vehicle of a visually gorgeous painting is a hoot
