Exhibited Laguna Art Museum 1998-9 "Life Lessons: How Art Can Change Your Life"
This wicked double entendre is actually quite deliciously complicated. On the one hand it refers to Jean Arp's bold Dada gesture of composing a collage from the random toss of squares of various sizes. On the other it comments ironically on the practice of a particularly hyperintellectual conceptualism. Christine Burgin once commented that the pleasure of an artist making such dry work is like a filing clerk calling out gleefully, "Hey, look at my neat new filing system!" The fact that this work links these two art-historical extremes in the vehicle of a visually gorgeous painting is a hoot
